Why Merchant Center

About 4 in 10 Google desktop searches now show an AI Overview.

At the top of the results

When Google expects a generated answer to help, an AI Overview appears above the traditional listings. Shoppers can ask a follow-up right from the AI Overview and continue in AI Mode, on desktop and mobile.

Up from about 1 in 4 a year earlier

The share of Google desktop searches with an AI Overview grew from 25.8% in July 2025 to 39.4% in June 2026, according to Comscore. Similarweb data reported by TechCrunch shows AI Overviews on 43% of searches, up from 15% a year earlier.

One Search experience

Google has combined AI Overviews and AI Mode, and AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly active users.

Measured in Merchant Center

Merchant Center's AI performance insights report shows how your brand and products perform on shopping questions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It covers organic results for English-language queries in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and India. Google's guidance for AI features in Search lists keeping Merchant Center information up to date among its SEO best practices.

The Shopping Graph

AI Mode and the Gemini app read product data from Google's Shopping Graph, which Google reported at more than 60 billion listings in May 2026. It is built from Merchant Center feeds, Manufacturer Center and product markup on merchant sites. Google added conversational attributes for both on May 20, 2026.

Beyond Google

Microsoft Merchant Center and PayPal Store Sync (by request) also accept Google-format product feeds, and Stripe's catalog uses Google-style fields. OpenAI accepts Google-format feeds from approved partners, for ChatGPT search only, after confirming the feed.

What we optimize

The fields Google's AI reads, filled and kept current.

We fill the fields Google says it uses, and Google documents them in more detail than any other AI shopping platform we track.

Titles and descriptions

Up to 150 and 5,000 characters, in the words shoppers search with.

Highlights and details

Selling points drawn from what sells on marketplaces, in Google's highlight and detail fields.

Conversational attributes

Answers from your agentic content calendar, in the fields Google built for AI Mode and Gemini.

Identifiers and variants

GTIN, brand and MPN, plus item group, color and size, so every variant is matched to the right product.

Shipping and returns

Shipping costs and a return policy, which Google requires for UCP checkout.

Checkout eligibility

The checkout eligibility attribute Google requires, set on the products you choose once Google approves your integration.

Built from marketplace signals

What shoppers respond to, in Google's format.

A feed synced straight from your storefront carries its titles and descriptions, and only the attributes it fills in. Marketplace data adds shopper search language, review themes and selling points. Autopilot brings them into Merchant Center and keeps them current as demand shifts.

What our audits have found

GTINs missing from the data Google reads, or filed in the wrong field. No shipping, return or rating data in product markup, even with review widgets on the page.

What we fix first

Identifiers and variant structure, so Google can match every product. Then the content fields AI Mode and Gemini use to answer shoppers. Then checkout readiness, on the products you choose.

Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)

Get ready for checkout inside AI Mode and Gemini.

The Universal Commerce Protocol is the open standard Google and Shopify launched on January 11, 2026, covering agent shopping from discovery to checkout. Google has been rolling out UCP checkout since February 11, 2026, as an early access program for select US merchants, and approves each integration. TikTok announced Buy Direct tests in October 2026, and Buy Direct also requires UCP.

What we set

The checkout eligibility attribute, the return policy and customer support details in Merchant Center, on the products you choose.

What Google does

Approves each integration. Payment runs on Google Pay.

Your platform

Checkout connects to your commerce platform through UCP. According to press reports, eligible US Shopify merchants were told in September 2026 that native checkout on Google had been enabled automatically.

How it works

From an outside audit to a monthly report.

01 Audit

59 checks of your Google presence across crawler access, identifiers, attributes, structured data, Google surfaces, policies, market coverage and agentic readiness. No account access needed.

02 Map

Shopper signals from the marketplaces and your agentic content calendar map to Merchant Center fields, product by product. You approve what goes live.

03 Maintain

We update the feed content as your catalog and demand change.

04 Measure

One monthly report: Merchant Center's AI performance insights, your visibility on AI Mode and Gemini prompts tracked in Peec AI, and Google sessions and revenue from GA4.

Where your product data goes

One product record, published to Merchant Center, your Agentsite and your Amazon listings.

Pairs with Agentsite

The open web is the other half.

Merchant Center optimization covers the feed Google's AI reads. An Agentsite covers the open web, read by AI crawlers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and others. The agentic content calendar feeds both, so work on one carries over to the other. Each is priced separately.

How Agentsites work →

Before you ask.

Do we need Google Ads?

No. Merchant Center products can appear in AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and free listings without an ad budget. Shopping ads draw on the same feed, so they get the same product data.

Is this a Google service?

No. It is an Autopilot service for Google Merchant Center. Autopilot is not affiliated with Google.
