Ingredient-accurate Amazon listing optimization for beauty and cosmetics brands

In beauty, a content failure is usually a data failure with legal consequences. The INCI declaration sits in a JPEG, forty shade children carry no undertone, and one word in a bullet can suppress the ASIN overnight. Autopilot rebuilds the catalog as structured, screened data, published only after your regulatory lead approves it.

What we do

Built for beauty and cosmetics

Two halves of the same catalog: the Amazon listing a shopper sees, and the machine-readable record an assistant reads.

The Amazon side

Listing Optimization

Done-for-you optimization across the whole catalog. We build keyword markets from your Search Query Performance data, measure market share bottom-up on unbranded traffic, and publish 2 to 3 updates per ASIN per month. Every batch is screened, approved by your team in review-first mode, then verified at go-live. Alexa GEO optimization is part of the same work, because Amazon's own assistant reads the same fields.

  • Full INCI declarations published as structured text, not only as a photograph of the label, so search and Amazon's assistant can actually read them.
  • Shade families rebuilt with undertone, depth position, coverage and finish as attributes instead of proprietary shade names alone.
  • Compliance screening before publish: drug-claim language, Drug Facts and active ingredient attributes on SPF hybrids, pure white main images at RGB 255,255,255.
The AI side

AgentSites

A machine-readable product site on your own domain, built from the same governed data and cited directly by answer engines. When someone asks for a fragrance-free moisturizer for rosacea-prone skin, there is a governed record to answer from rather than a guess. About ten minutes of your time to set up.

  • Built for first-party citation in ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta and Claude on ingredient, concentration and skin-concern questions.
  • Every constraint an assistant needs to answer: INCI, active percentage, skin type, skin concern, undertone, item form, routine step, certifications.
  • Per-crawler agent traffic, so you can see which models read your catalog and which pages they pull.

Three problems every beauty and cosmetics brand fights

None of them are creative problems. All three are data problems that surface as suppressions, thin variations and unanswerable queries.

Your ingredient list is a photograph, not data

You filed a complete ingredient declaration with FDA to satisfy product listing under MoCRA, the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act. Then you satisfied Amazon with a picture of the label, because Amazon's September 24, 2024 cosmetic data mandate accepts an ingredient list as image or text. Search cannot read that picture. Neither can an AI assistant, and neither can any automated screen against the fourteen states that have now enacted bans on intentionally added PFAS in cosmetics, seven of them already in force, Maine and Vermont from January 1, 2026. A nationally listed ASIN can breach those states' restrictions and still run live and Prime-eligible everywhere, because nothing in the catalog knows what is in the bottle. The drift is structural: FDA product listings update annually, the ASIN updates continuously, and after a reformulation nobody owns the reconciliation. Autopilot builds the ingredient record from sources you already have, the pack, spec sheets, your own DTC pages, publishes it as structured text on every ASIN in the order 21 CFR 701.3 permits, descending predominance above 1 percent, then sub-1 percent ingredients and color additives, and re-publishes the full affected set when a formula changes.

Forty shades, no structured way to tell them apart

Beauty variation themes commonly include Size, Color, SizeColor, Scent and SizeScent, though the valid set differs by product type and Amazon has retired themes before, and beauty families are unusually large and unusually flat. A single foundation parent can carry forty-plus children separated only by a proprietary shade name, with undertone, depth position, coverage and finish living in prose or nowhere at all. Children do not inherit parent images, so every child needs its own correct swatch or the family reads as an undifferentiated stack. Then the 2026 change most brands have not modelled: from February 12, 2026 Amazon separated reviews where variations have substantive differences, rolling out by category with at least 30 days notice and completing on May 31, 2026. Color differences retain shared reviews. Secondary scent differences retain them where scent is not the primary feature. Primary scent differences lose them, which fragments a large fragrance or body care family into thin per-child pools at the exact moment Alexa for Shopping is reported by independent testing to stop recommending anything under 4.0 stars. Autopilot treats variation family integrity as a standing job: correct themes, complete child attributes, swatch and image checks at child level, and 24/7 detection when a child detaches or a theme is retired.

One word written for social takes the ASIN down

Classification turns on intended use, not formulation. Under 21 U.S.C. 321(g)(1)(C) an article, other than food, intended to affect the structure or any function of the body is a drug, and FDA has published no monograph for anti-wrinkle products, so a genuine structure or function anti-aging claim can make the product an unapproved new drug. Amazon does not weigh intent. It pattern-matches strings in titles, bullets, description and A+ content and can suppress on detection, with reported triggers including brightens, treats, clinically proven and wrinkle reduction. The two regimes now feed each other: FDA warning letters increasingly cite Amazon product listings and social posts as evidence of intended use, and FDA enforcement is running hot in the drug and biologics programs a claim-carrying cosmetic would be pulled into, 303 warning letters in FY2025 against 190 the year before. Your detail page is also an intake channel. A buyer message or review describing a serious adverse event can put the Responsible Person on notice and start the 15 business day MoCRA reporting clock from receipt, and FDA has run a public cosmetics adverse event dashboard since September 12, 2025. Autopilot screens every string against your approved claim language before publish, holds the batch in review-first mode for your team, verifies at go-live, and surfaces review and message language your regulatory lead needs to see. The reporting decision stays with you.

Questions we hear from brands like yours

Who owns the claims, you or our regulatory team?

Your team, always. Autopilot works inside the claim language your regulatory lead has already approved, and nothing goes live without sign-off: we prepare the batch, you approve it in review-first mode, we publish and verify at go-live. We are operational support for your compliance boundaries. We are not a legal or regulatory adviser and we certify nothing.

Our INCI panels only exist as label images. How do you turn that into structured data without burning our team?

We assemble brand context from what you already have: pack artwork, spec sheets, your own DTC product pages, and your FDA product listing if you choose to share it. We draft the declaration as text in the order 21 CFR 701.3 permits, descending predominance above 1 percent, then sub-1 percent ingredients and color additives in any order, your team approves it, and we publish it to the ASIN while keeping the panel image alongside. The catalog work is ours. Your side is approval.

We sell on amazon.com and in Europe. Can one ingredient string serve both?

No, and it should not. EU Regulation 2023/1545 adds 56 fragrance allergens requiring individual on-label declaration above 0.001 percent in leave-on and 0.01 percent in rinse-off products. Non-compliant products may not be placed on the EU market from 31 July 2026, nor made available on the EU market from 31 July 2028. There is no equivalent federal on-label obligation in force today. MoCRA directs FDA to set a fragrance allergen labeling rule and that rulemaking is still pending, so a US label may still declare fragrance or parfum collectively. California is the exception to watch: SB 312 has required fragrance allergens above the same 0.001 percent leave-on and 0.01 percent rinse-off thresholds to be reported to the California Safe Cosmetics Program since 2022, and that data is published. Same product, same EAN, legitimately different ingredient content per marketplace, so we keep locale-specific content instead of collapsing it into one string.

Does structured data actually change what AI assistants say about our products?

Beauty queries are constraint queries: fragrance-free for rosacea-prone skin, mineral SPF for a toddler, a neutral undertone in a deep shade. Every one resolves against ingredients, concentration, skin type and certification, and none of that can be read out of a photograph of a label. A recent cohort of 15 brands grew AI citations by 48% in four weeks, and one AgentSite took 133,000 agent hits in 30 days across 32 crawlers. The same fields feed Alexa for Shopping inside Amazon, which now sits in the search bar itself.

Sun care ramps fast and our SPF hybrids are complicated. Can you keep up?

Sun care is the sharpest seasonal curve in the category and the worst place to find a problem in June. Sunscreens are OTC drugs under monograph M020, so they need a Drug Facts panel, active ingredient and purpose attributes, and water resistance qualified at 40 or 80 minutes rather than waterproof, and a tinted moisturizer carrying SPF has to satisfy both the cosmetic and the drug regime. Autopilot publishes against 35+ micro seasons and tent pole events and does the structural work in the trough, so peak week is a publishing exercise rather than a compliance discovery. If an ASIN does go down, beauty approval and reinstatement typically means manufacturer or authorized distributor invoices dated within the last 180 days, Certificates of Analysis and GMP certificates, requested with the listing already suppressed.

Find out what your ingredient data is costing you

Autopilot is an Amazon listing optimization and AI discovery service. Since 2023 it has published more than 2 million listing updates for 450+ brands. The free audit reads your beauty catalog the way Amazon and an AI assistant read it: which ASINs carry ingredient data as text and which hide it inside an image, which SPF hybrids are missing Drug Facts and active ingredient attributes, which shade children have no undertone or depth, which strings sit close to the drug-claim line, and which variation families lost pooled reviews in the February to May 2026 review separation rollout. You get the ASIN list and the fix order. No commitment.
